A Winding Journey to Financial Independence and Retiring Early (FIRE)

Event Description:

Erin Genz is a physicist, STEM volunteer (science, technology, engineering, math), mother, hockey player, skier, and real estate investor.  Her journey to financial independence has not been straightforward but she retired from engineering before the age of 40 and now spends her time helping to educate others about STEM and personal finance.  Join us for an exploration of what the FIRE path can look like as well as tips and tools for your own journey!

Facilitator: Erin Genz

Erin Genz retired from her engineering management role in January 2022, before the age of 40. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Purdue University and her college years were not spent thinking about money. She was too busy playing clarinet in the Purdue All-American Marching Band.

During her almost 20 years in ballistic missile defense, Erin worked for a variety of government contractors and invested in her 401(k) and Roth IRA because “it's what you do when you get a grown-up job”. She didn't really start her financial journey until she bought a house in 2006. That house would become her first rental property and led to an exploration of financial independence and retiring early (FIRE). Throughout her career, Erin held a variety of engineering roles (sensor subject matter expert, systems and requirements engineer, product lead, end-user trainer, and engineering manager). She has analytical experience in statistical modeling and tactical systems and built radars, defense networks, and system models all over the world.

Erin now uses her technical and management skills to help others find their path in engineering, management, and personal finance. When not volunteering, she plays hockey, skis, gardens, hikes, and raises her three boys with her husband in Colorado Springs, CO. She is a native Coloradan and can't seem to move away from the mountains for long before coming right back!
