Many people don’t understand what goes into instructional design. They think you can throw together a PowerPoint deck and communicate the training to the participants. An information PowerPoint is NOT training. Sound instructional design involves completing a thorough analysis and identification of the performance gap you are trying to fill. Then designing an interactive, engaging solution that accomplishes the defined learning objectives.
Many authoring tools allow you to simply import PowerPoint decks into their software to help expedite the design process for E-Learning. AVOID this at all cost unless you just want to communicate information and don’t need a change in behavior.

Chuck Herbst serves as a Lead Instructional Designer for USAA. Chuck has been in the training and development field for over 25 years and is responsible for maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction and other learning experiences. He earned his Masters in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Technology from Regis University. He is CPLP certified and completed the Designing Synchronous Learning Certificate Program through ATD. In his spare time, Chuck enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.
